| | Authour of this mod unknown... no disrespect intended If you have a UX90 with SSD and don't want to purchase the latest model and want to upgrade your hardware by yourself, you should read this. The main purpose why I do this modification is to get rid of the CF card, where Vista WMP used to go there and synchronize when I play media and it slow down my machine. From the 1st picture you can see the original USB port is covered and I have 2 USB port on the top of the machine one plug with a USB stick the other with a cable. |
| | What you need other than soldering kits: 1) A square small 4 ports USB hub. 2) A USB stick, I am using Adata 8GB PD7 which support readyboost. 3) Small amount of flat cable. Modification work: 1) Remove the case of the hub and sold out all the 5 plugs on the USB hub PCB board. I use one of the USB plug for pluging in the the port of UX and 2 as a new inlet plug for UX. 2) Remove the plastic case and the USB plug. 3) Why i use flat cable? because you can identify one pin between the 2 PCBs and the rest of the core is in sequence. After you have soldering them correctly, you can seperate them to make it more flexible. |
| | Remove the cover of UX: 1) Take away the battery. 2) Remove six screws. One is located underneath battery. One at each corner of the machine and the last is under the stylus (take out the stylus, take out the small cover at the back of UX and you can see the white screw). |
| | Soldering works: Make sure you identify the 1st pin correctly. It is easier if you use the plugs that you removed from the PCB to identify it. Positioning the board: I place the HUB under the SSD to give enough space for the USB stick. Testing: 1) You can put the hub in first and test it before putting the USB stick in. 2) After you put the USB stick in, you have to go into BIOS by pressing F2 when UX boot up and disable the 'External Boot Drive'. If you want to boot external drive Enable it and it will boot from external device. Final touch-up: 1) Cover the UX USB port with something like in 1st picture. 2) Trim the side of the plug of USB cable so that you can really use both ports. WARNING: 1) I just describe what I am doing to my baby and I am not responsible for any damage for other machine during your modification. 2) Don't try this if you don't have confidence, ask others for help. It can damage your machine if you are not making it correctly. |

Could you please show your connection (how do you connect the pins from the Sony USB port to the USB hub and how do you get the power from the Sony to the USB hub)?
Thanks |
